St. Elisabeth has supported Family Promise since it started on the North Shore in 2010. Family Promise provides temporarily homeless families with children a supported pathway to self-sufficiency. Family promise works with two to four families at a time, providing shelter, meals and resources. By working with local congregations for nighttime accommodations and community volunteers who provide meals and personal connection with the families, Family Promise is effective and very cost efficient. When we began this ministry, we invited the Congregation of Am Shalom to partner with us, and they now extend Family Promise’s reach by hosting their own program. In fact, we are happy to report that several North Shore houses of faith have now become participating congregations in this ministry.

Today, St. Elisabeth partners with St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Wilmette where they have the space and facilities to host families. It is a wonderful opportunity to share the love of Christ by helping local families in need. St. Elisabeth volunteers provide this ministry for a week at a time about four times a year. The specific responsibilities for helping include; serving as hosts for the families, joining with others for cooking and/or serving meals, or sleeping overnight and being present for breakfast before families leave for work and school. Families with children are welcomed as volunteers, and the children love to play with other children. It’s a fun opportunity!
